The global feed industry currently has to cope with multiple challenges, of which rising production costs, animal diseases, and supply chain disruptions by geopolitical events are the most dominant ones. On the midterm horizon, climate change will darken the industry’s perspective even further. How can industry stakeholder navigate in such most turbulent times, secure profitability, and at the same time transfer the sector towards more sustainability?

The global feed industry currently has to cope with multiple challenges, of which rising production costs, animal diseases, and supply chain disruptions by geopolitical events are the most dominant ones. On the midterm horizon, climate change will darken the industry’s perspective even further. How can industry stakeholder navigate in such most turbulent times, secure profitability, and at the same time transfer the sector towards more sustainability?

A recent market study of Alltech revealed that technology has the biggest impact to cope with the present stress factors (see diagram). Among the technologies making the biggest impact are nutritional solutions, biosecurity and the automation of labor/robotics. Innovative technologies that increase efficiency and improve sustainability were cited by many participants as being highly promising and important. Companies adapting new technologies in an early stage might not only master the challengers more successful, but at the same time also create new competitive edges and growth engines. “The biggest opportunities for growth are (…) sustainable solutions to reduce production costs”,  a respondent said. Such a solution e. g. is PelletingPro, making the latest developments in sensor technology and artificial intelligence accessible for feed millers. Depending on the overachieving target, PelletingPro can reduce energy consumption in the pelleting process (increased sustainability), or lower the formulation costs (higher profitability) at constant tonnage as compared to a conventional process. A close partner to the industry since many decades, Bühler is committed to support the transformation of the feed milling industry innovative technology and the know-how from a broad network of industry, academia, and institutional partnerships.
